    Tips for 2L?

So I pretty average in 1L (mostly B’s) and I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on things that I can look out for or work on to really boost my grades in 2L? I know that one thing I need to work on is writing better case briefs but I’d love to know if anyone else has any tips or advice! thanks a bunch!

    TRU IS RESCINDING OFFERS

From what I know, there are a few more calls tomorrow. But it sounded like these were people who they’d already tried to call and couldn’t get ahold of. It’s based on when people accepted their offers—those who paid their deposit at the end of April.

Have they already made their calls? now I'm paranoid I feel horrible for people who have had their offer taken back

    TRU IS RESCINDING OFFERS

They are offering deferrals for next year (or a waitlist for this year, but realistically there’s not much chance of that moving much). But people have already quit jobs, signed leases.. it’s pretty significant to have such a big plan suddenly cut short.

    Ask me questions!

Very much so! It gave a very practical outlook on the current legal situation in Canada and how lawyers (especially those trained from from Lincoln Alexander) can play a significant role in alleviating it. It was also a very tech-heavy assignment so it also showed us how technology can be a very useful tool in all aspects of the law.
  9. Honestly I can't imagine how anyone who goes here would know that lol, unless one of the few transfers is on this forum. You should try reaching out to people who transferred, or contacting the school directly.

Being a lawyer is very very hard - discuss.

This is what I was trying to get at when I wrote that "people depend on you, the standards can be exacting, and the stakes can be high if you mess up". When all of that is true, and it's compounded when you're learning the ropes, it can be very hard to say "I've done enough. I'm ready for this." Whether it's a pleading, research, speaking notes for an oral submission, a factum, or whatever, you can always think of *just one more thing* that might improve it, or give your client a better shot. Or maybe you can't think of anything, so you'd better read it over one more time, just in case! L

    TRU IS RESCINDING OFFERS

I heard some mutterings about a lawsuit? I don't know how serious it is but it'll be interesting to see how this progresses. I don't see why they can't just do what Uottawa did and create more seats.

I’m a long time reader of ls.ca but a first time contributor. Thanks for setting up this new forum. While I can’t comprehend a post that would address the breadth of this topic, FWIW I would add that those lawyers who place unreasonable expectations on themselves and perhaps may have anxious tendencies (which may, e.g., compel them to read that case or email just one more time) often do quite well in the practice of law professionally (at least in the early stages), but often at a personal expense. As a result, for some people (myself included) the practice of law ends up being

Big Law Starting Salaries in the US are starting to increase

Looks like all the big US firms are starting to fall like dominoes for these recent raises. Hopefully this trickles north of the border soon.

Being able to work from home (outside of COVID)

I'm at a large firm in Vancouver, and what I've heard from my firm and friends at several others in the neighbourhood are that lawyers won't be mandated back full-time, but likely will be asked to come in 2-3x a week (possibly on the same days) for culture purposes (and to make sure that expensive leased real estate doesn't go to waste).

Mahmud Jamal named to Supreme Court

I was hoping that Jamal J.A. would be nominated for Abella J.'s seat. He is an excellent judge. His judicial and written prowess are on clear display in Duffy v. Canada (Senate), 2020 ONCA 536. Hopefully Moldaver J. will be replaced by an Indigenous woman.

    Tattoos

I want another one. For obvious reasons, I was thinking of getting a couple ravens on each shoulder. Thought and Memory etc. But those motherfucking sons of bitches white supremecists have kind of moved in on the Viking/Norse territory (which I do have some family claim to). So.... real hesistant, thank you douchebags. Anyone have some favoured artists, or styles, or things I can consider? When I look at tattoos I like clean lines, real art to the thing, and meaning. Obviously crows and ravens are my bag. Help?

Being able to work from home (outside of COVID)

Here's someone representing a company that has 2 million square feet of office space under construction, a good chunk of which they broke ground on after the start of the pandemic: https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2021/06/hines-breaks-ground-t3-sterling-road-office-complex This person may be making a self-interested statement, but they've put their money behind it.

He did five summers at four different firms (including one obviously in labour law). Impressive!

    TRU IS RESCINDING OFFERS

The vibe I get from this school is really messed up now. Why not grant deferrals for the next cycle? Why rescind?

Hopefully an indigenous judge is among the next wave of considerations. This was an excellent choice.
  22. Salut!
  23. Posting for a friend who was offered admission on April 9th. Paid their deposit shortly after. They just got a call from TRU saying that TRU has OVERBOOKED THEIR CLASS and was calling to RESCIND THEIR OFFER, and that an official email from the Dean would follow. This is absolutely fucked. Can they do this???

Happy about the diversity, but it would have been nice to have a woman of colour for even more balance given there will likely only be one more seat available for many years to come, and even better an Indigenous person.
  26. Hello, I have two questions; 1) I know that this is not reflective of all years, but how was your weekly 1L schedule? (i.e., how long were the gaps between classes, how early were the earliest classes, and when did classes usually end), and; 2) does Bora Laskin have a on-site gym and/or showers within the facility? And if you have the time, may I ask you some study-related questions via the messaging system? Thank you for taking the time to help prospective students!
