Work Environment - Toronto vs Vancouver (Corporate Firms)
I apologize in advance as these questions probably seem silly or trivial (yes, I know applicants/incoming students ask the weirdest questions - sorry) but I'm trying to find out as much as I can about the differences between Toronto and Vancouver jobs to make an informed decision heading into law school. I've read all the discussion about corporate "Big Law" associates having long hours and no work/life balance, and this is not an issue I'm concerned about. I'm willing to put in the hours and the years of long, hard work, but my questions mainly revolve around the differences between the Toronto and Vancouver markets. If anyone has any answers for the any of the following questions, I would appreciate it! - Is the actual work being performed in the corporate environment significantly different between the two cities (i.e. I imagine there may be bigger deals and transactions happening in the Toronto market mainly because it's the center of business in Canada, but are the skills and experience gained from the work being performed largely the same)? - Do Vancouver associates generally work the same number of hours per week as Toronto associates at equivalent large firms? - Do Vancouver associates wake up extra early to match the Toronto hours of business, since that's when the stock market/business transactions happen? - Anecdotally, in your opinion, which city is better for future career progression (job opportunities, making partner, future transition to in-house, etc.) or is there no real difference? - Anecdotally, which city would you prefer to work in? If no news by now should I assume an R?
I'd be pretty surprised if they rejected you and doesn't seem like a stats issue. Normally I'd be more skeptical but in your case I'd say don't give up yet. I know reaching out is generally frowned upon but it might be worth a try in your case. -

Western or Dalhousie
Both are really good. You can't really go wrong. I don't think you could say one is more "collegial", but current students would be a better source for that info. Where do you want to live for the next three years? Those are very different cities. Is proximity / commuting back to Toronto important to you at all? -

If no news by now should I assume an R?
As title suggests, if I haven’t heard back from UNB by now (no A, R or WL) should I assume it’s an R (or at best a slot on the WL waaay down at the bottom lol) and move on? UNB is my number one and I only applied to it this cycle, so if I don’t get in I’m done for this year. Should I just begin preparing for next cycle and use this time to grieve the R and start studying for the LSAT again. I don’t know how much more I can handle mentally in terms of waiting and checking everyday, etc. I’m losing sleep and going a bit mad. Stats for reference, 3.5/4.3 w drops and 161 -

You’re almost certainly better off trying to make the move from one of the top Bay Street firms rather than any of the verein-style “global” firms.- 1

To add to that, I would not mention your interest in moving to the NY office come recruitment time. Some Canadian firms will see you as a flight risk because their NY offices are small. -

Depends on what global firm, your practice (M&A/Cap/markets/Finance will yield the most success), deal sheet, and yes, your school and grades. -

Help! I want to be a solicitor but I have a clerkship lined up
I agree with the advice said so far. I just wanted to add that if you do good work for the solicitor group (and they like you), that is the best way to get hired back into that group. I would not worry about clerking being litigation focused and that being a bad career move long term for a corporate career. I clerked with a good handful of folks at the FC/FCA, who ended up going into corporate work or quasi corporate work, and none of them regretted their choice to clerk. In my experience, firms think about clerking as being akin to an additional year of training - clerking is an opportunity that you can only do as a young lawyer, and they understand that it is great experience. Clerking also build a great network! Since it sounds like you do have litigation interests, I have no doubt that you will have a great experience. I will add too that clerking is known (at least among clerks) to be a good career reset - people pivot their careers all the time/ pivot firms/ pivot fields. You may find yourself wanting to change it up, and clerking will give you options to do so! -

Western or Dalhousie
I have been admitted to both Western and Dalhousie and I am attempting to decide which would be a better environment for me. I am from Toronto but I am not decided on whether I want to come back after Law School and I have not decided on what field of Law I want to pursue. I am interested in a fairly collegial environment. Would appreciate any input. -

Salut tout le monde, Est-ce que certains ont été ajoutés à la liste d'attente ? C'est mon cas, j'ai été ajouté à la liste d'attente le 12 avril. Je stresse beaucoup. L'année dernière, ceux dans la liste d'attente sont tous rentrés dans le programme. Donc il y'a de fortes chances que ce soit comme ça cette année aussi, on croise les doigts !😩 -
