UBC vs. UofA
Ultimately if you want to practice in Alberta, your best bet is UofA. Nothing wrong with wanting to try a different city, but your networks will be built up where you study and it's a lot easier to do OCIs and other networking events with Alberta employers if you're studying at UofA.- 1

UBC vs. UofA
Having some trouble deciding before the deadline in a few days. Looking to practice Indigenous Law and/or Corporate Law. Any currents students want to sell me on their school? Got scholarships to both, UofA’s offer is larger though. I do want to practice in AB after my degree. But I guess a part of me wanted to try a different city for a change. Now I’m wondering if that’s really a good enough reason to study out of province. Thanks everyone. -

In Need of CGPA Advice
Wasting another year to go from a 3.46 to a 3.5 is definitely not worth it. As it stands, 3.46 and 168 is fairly competitive for Osgoode. If you only studied for 2 weeks and achieved a 168, you're basically a genius and should definitely aim for a 170+, which would give you overwhelmingly good chances at Oz. -

Mental Health Break
I am struggling with my mental health at my current job and I am having difficulty getting work done. I am a sixth year call and in litigation. I have an offer for a new job but I do not feel that I am in the best state to start a new job. The offer also does not provide me with any time off between my old job and starting the new job. I am considering quitting my job and taking some time off to recover but I am worried about finding another job. Has anyone quit their job without a job lined up? How long did you take off? How did you leave your job without leaving a bad impression for quitting for your mental health? How long did it take for you to find a new job? How did you explain this gap to new potential employers? Any advice would be helpful. -

No Summer Job :(
I see this repeated by lawyers ad nauseam: summer students or articling students don't make money for the firm. This is patently not true for most students, whose work is billed at $100-$200 (or sometimes, dishonestly, even at the counsel rate) but who are paid barely minimum wage, if at all. I've scrutinized the billing of a small firm that seems to survive on student and other low-paid labor; I simply don't see how any small firm would make a loss by hiring an averagely competent student. In many cases, the supervising lawyer spends barely a few minutes every day providing guidance or mentoring, so the cost of mentoring isn't a major factor either. It may only be true for the small minority of students who make an excessive number of mistakes requiring rectification after the student leaves. Even then, clients do not scrutinize their bill in detail and accept paying for the hours spent fixing mistakes, such as amending pleadings, set aside motions etc. The minority of students who cost more than they bill should not lead to the generalization that all students do not make money for the firm. Similarly, the minority of firms that take their responsibility towards students seriously and provide extensive, costly training should not be used to support this generalization. Unless hard evidence justifies the generalization, I think it should not be asserted because it will seem to an objective observer a self-serving justification for exploitatively low pay. This is not a matter that can be resolved by tendering affidavits of lawyers swearing that students cost more than they are worth. There needs to be objective law firm accounting evidence. -

Robson Hall (UManitoba) vs Dal
Thank you @Mal @Conge @GoatDuck. You’ve all made very good points. I believe Robson does offer students the opportunity to do exchange so I may get my out of province experience that way. Taking on more debt than necessary is really not something I am very excited about. I am glad to hear that rankings are basically meaningless and the networking of studying in the province I want to work should be a big deciding factor. Thanks again! -

Groupchat
There's a discord server made by students. L&L should be setting up the official Facebook group, if they haven't already. -

Groupchat
I was just wondering if there are any existing Instagram,WhatsApp, or Facebook group chats. If not, at any time will any be made?
