Next step after federal clerkship?
Not sure if there's a formal recruitment process for clerks, but a good way to get a pulse on who is hiring is just to cold email the head of whatever department or sub-office that you want to work for and start networking. Despite the various formal government hiring processes, those at the top still have a lot of discretion with respect to who receive interviews. You will be an internal candidate for the DOJ, IRB, PPSC, etc. so you will also be easier to hire out of any pools or competitions that are open. With the budget cuts, you're also probably a more attractive candidate than an extremal hire. Feel free to DM me for more information. Good luck. -

My LSAT score has been received by uofa today. I’m assuming they did a batch of them? -

Thanks for the response. I'm really struggling right now and don't know if I can actually improve it in January. Rather I am more worried I will score worse. Regardless at this point I think I'll be happy at any of my choices. It kills me inside knowing if I wrote it in august I would do so much better because I am strong in LR and RC but absolutely bomb LG almost every test. I feel so lost right now lol. I'm praying for at least one of Queens/Western so hopefully my GPA helps squeak me into one of those. -

I didn't even look at the date tbh. I check this forum maybe once a month to answer messages from people considering NCA and just search "Bond" or "UK" to offer my perspective if appropriate. I think it bothers you that some NCA students - especially Bond grads - were able to make it as far or further (however one defines that, anyway) than some Canadian grads. Explains why you always jump into these conversations. *shrug*, no skin off my back. -

Advice for how to lateral
There's never a bad time to network. But as for explicitly asking about associate roles or opportunities, might be better to wait until other firms actually shore up who's coming back from their articling cohorts. Also, don't be afraid to speak to the people you work with. If there's no spots for new hires they will likely be more than happy to use their own networks to help you out. You can facilitate that by proving what an asset you are during articling. -

I would go even further to say that you should focus your efforts on learning what you can at your current firm and maintaining your interest and engagement. You never know what could happen, Like Ohshmagoda said, and firms can tell when someone is disinterested. -

Age 27 Took the LSAT in November and got a 161. This is not what I'm super proud of, but I had a lot of technical difficulties during the exam, which I believe played a factor. I registered for the January LSAT but dropped it due to the slight disadvantage having a January score puts me in. -

Advice for how to lateral
Not to divert the thread...but if we know we're not going to be hired back before we even start our articles (in-house position with a small legal team), when would it be appropriate to start looking around or networking? -
