TMU vs. Western
Western had a good clinic if you want to get hands on experience with LTB, civil and criminal cases. A lot of the clients are low income and would fit your social justice bend. More importantly, where do you want to work and what is the cost difference for you? If you want to do social justice work, keeping debt down should be your number one priority. Otherwise, you are going to be tempted by the dark side of the law and fall into the social justice to Big Law pipeline - in which case Western is the clear winner. -

2L Transfers -> Alberta Law Schools
Given you're still in the admissions cycle and not currently in 1L, I would in your shoes just wait and reapply next year to get the school you want if it doesn't happen this one. Unless you're okay with the good likelihood of having to do your whole JD at the Ontario school(s) you've been accepted to. There's no reason you need to start law school right now to the point of accepting an offer with full intent to try and get out of that offer, for the reasons GoatDuck has stated. -

2L Transfers -> Alberta Law Schools
You generally need very good grades in 1L and a good reason for transfer. It's a black box; the only info out there is what's on the website and personal experiences of students who've attempted transferring. Others can shed more light on this, but I think that an average student should expect that they will not be able to transfer. -

Hello, Currently admitted 1L in Ontario. Desperately hoping to transfer to Alberta (UofC or UofA) for 2L. What are the chances? Any current transfer students? The school websites are vague to say the least. I have reached out to the schools directly, and they just copy and paste what the website says. Trying to get a sense of realistic chance of this happening. Any insight appreciated! Thanks for reading. -

Chances/Advice for where to apply with somewhat unique softs (GPA 3.86/4.33, LSAT T.B.D)
Hello all I possess somewhat unique softs on top of pretty decent standard stats and was wondering what schools would be most likely to additionally factor them in. I have a Diploma in Heritage Carpentry w/honours (indicating only a high grade average) and two years working in the field. On top of that I am working towards a standard B.A in an honours program, having just finished my third year. GPA is likely a bit higher as I have several additional transfer courses that my institution doesn't factor in its calculation. And in addition to those, I have some more pretty regular softs -Multiple club involvements, a few volunteering engagements -Partially working during school year, quite varied work experience in general compared to most applicants -Volunteer First Responder w/ St.Johns Ambulance I'm holding out for new August LSAT but anticipate a mark in the 160-165 range barring either a disaster or miracle. So in short, which schools would my additional two year diploma and other softs be more likely to be a positive factor? I think I've got an unusually strong holistic application. Thanks! -

Could you define what "social justice and criminal law" means to you? Because in the abstract those can mean fundamentally opposed things. The crown who puts "bad people" in prison believes he is promoting social justice through the criminal law. The abolitionist criminal defence lawyer would also consider herself to care about "social justice and criminal law", while doing basically the opposite. -

How do legal recruiter services work?
Excellent point. I was on the firm's side of this equation for many years. Practically every recruiter you could name attempts to maintain a "connection" with the major firms by checking in by phone, lunch invitations, etc., etc. Receiving the same candidate from more than one of them is not ideal. -

Finished law school, feeling defeated
I don't know exactly what you're feeling, OP, but I always felt sad at the end of a term - from high school through to end of 3L. Even though I generally felt I did fine, I'd reflect on how I could have done a little bit better if I'd focused more or sought more help, or how I'd rushed through days because I was waiting for what's next but didn't slow down to enjoy the moments. But I think that's just part of life and a lesson to appreciate the time you have while it's happening, rather than always racing toward the next milestone. If you're complaining about one specific exam and thinking you could have spotted an extra issue or something, then that is silly and you need to move on. Your grades are obviously strong if you're clerking at the ONCA and, even if they weren't, this will not matter in a few years. I haven't looked at my transcript since I started articling and doubt I'll ever need to again. -
