Salary research help (Toronto)
My thoughts are similar to QueensDenning, and I also want to point out that an $80k new-call base salary for 1400 collected hours per year isn’t too great of a deal if you’re working in Toronto. Unless the firm you’re working for bills you out for a low rate in the context of Toronto’s market (i.e., ~$170/hour), your base salary will be less than 1/3 of what you collect annually, which is a pretty standard base salary-to-hours collected ratio that you should seek. For reference, the non-Toronto market I work in often charges $200-230 per hour for their new-calls, which would equate to a similar base salary as what you’re asking for at ~1200 collected hours per year. This is fairly standard for the market, and I know of some juniors that are in arrangements making ~$100k base at ~1500 collected hours per year. To give you a better answer, you’d have to provide additional info such as what QueensDenning pointed out. -

Should I take business law during law school for the bar exam?
Hundreds of people pass every year having never done a single business law class. I'm actually reading through that section of the bar matierals right now and it all seems fine. If you're interested take it, but don't do it for the bar.- 2

Should I take business law during law school for the bar exam?
Hey everyone! I'm still in 2L but as a ~constant worrier~, I've been thinking of ways to maximize my success for the bar exam. I was wondering if I should take business law in my 3L to understand the concepts for the bar exam or if it's feasible for someone without a business background to learn the rules during bar prep. For context, I couldn't even tell you what securities are :') (I know, I'm actually clueless). -

Why does UofT not take reference letters
I don't know that you're in the minority - reference-checking for a job is entirely different from reference letters for academic admission, for the reasons you cite. "Making sure the person's last boss doesn't say they're an axe murderer" is not the same as "I already have a transcript saying this person's a good student, now let me read a boilerplate letter about how they're a good student."- 2

Salary research help (Toronto)
Depends on the firm, practice area, definition of what “small” is, etc. You can’t generalize the salaries of all “small firms” based on location. -

Change practice group
How can I change my practice group? From securities to finance. Every firm I reach out to wants me to have relevant finance experience, which I won't have until I get work from finance group (nothing has come out of the finance group in my firm). It feels like a life sentence. -
