Do Vancouver firms not send acknowledgement emails?
I participated in the Articling Recruit two years ago and found that only a few firms sent acknowledgment emails. However, the big law firms are on viLaw, so you should be able to check your status if you're concerned about them receiving the application. -

How early did you guys start studying for the LSAT?
Pretty last minute for me. I decided I wanted to apply to law school in April of last year and began studying immediately. Took my first LSAT in October, applied in November, and took my second one in January of this year.- 1

I started studying for the LSAT when I was 19. Im 22 now. By the time I take it, it will have been exactly 3 years. -

Tips for June
Hi everyone; I'm looking for some tips for the June LSAT. I'm aiming for a 162+ and have been PTing around 159-161 typically (-3 LG, -5-7 LR, and -6-8 RC). Any tips to hopefully get those 2 or 3 questions right on test day to go from a 161 to 162 or higher? Edit: I've heard LG tends to be the easiest to improve, so I'm planning on putting the next two weeks to trying to get to -0 on LG, but any other tips would also be appreciated. -

I don’t know about the not cutting partnership draws part (although I suspect basically every firm on bay street managed to have the profits per partner stay at least level between 2019 and 2020). But it’s a matter of public record that NRF cut both associate and support staff salaries by 10% during COVID, something most firms did not do. My recollection is that they also laid off or otherwise did not pay some of their support staff, although that admittedly wasn’t reported in the Globe -

Offer negotiation failed?
Agreed fully. It's not like you out of nowhere asked for more money when someone offered you a permanent job, as opposed to your current contract situation, in a tough market, as a fresh call. Which some might perceive as biting the hand that feeds. You indicated a desire to negotiate, he welcomed it, and your offer was only a raise of 10-15% so it was hardly an offensive or insulting counter-offer. In fact, you said it was market rate. Look elsewhere. This screams toxic boss. -

The problem with a thread like this is that is pretty difficult to discern anything of value based on a handful of opinions that largely seem to be based on hearsay. There are shitty people and good people at every firm and your experience is going to depend very much on which of those people you work with. I know very little about Dentons but have a friend who recently lateraled there after working at two other Bay Street firms and has said very positive things about the culture, noting it is quite a bit more friendly and supportive than past experience at other firms. I am quite certain this is not accurate. Its been said before in other threads but it bears repeating: you should be basing your decision on the type of law you want to practice and not the "reputation" of the firm. Figure out what you want to do, figure out which firms are doing it well, and then meet with those people and decide if you like them. Cutting a firm out of your OCI list based on a rumour you read on the internet is unwise and signals a lack of intellectual rigour (you know, the kind you need to practice law). -

Almost certainly accepted. Your lower cGPA is easily mitigated (and then some) by everything else. Good luck! -

I recently made another post in this same category but as it turns out I was using LSAC’s GPA calculations and not OLSAS. This post reflects my OLSAS GPA. BA (hon) undergrad, extensive EC’s including a UN internship during undergrad, 2 years regular force army work experience since graduating and currently employed abroad in a sales role. LoR’s from a current queens prof and two Queens masters graduates. Bilingual FR/EN. Cheers. -

Chances for UBC/UVIC
Chances aren't great sub-160. Study like you're aiming for a 180, not the minimum. With that said, a 163+ should be enough. -

Chances for UBC/UVIC
I haven’t taken the LSAT yet (going to June 9th) but I am consistently scoring in the 158-162 range. My gpa is 90% which is a 4.33 I think. I am hoping to go to either UBC or UVIC. If I score below 160, so around 158-159, what are my chances? -

Ontario bar exam - where to store cellphone?
I'm sort of trying to figure out the same thing as you. I won't have a car so I might just bring a piece of outerwear and check it with my phone in one of the pockets. Not safe at all but it's either that or leave the phone at home, which is in itself another risk in case there is a TTC delay or something and I need to take an Uber to the testing centre. -

Ontario bar exam - where to store cellphone?
For anyone who has taken the bar exam in person, I know that we can’t bring cellphones into the testing area so did you just leave your phone at home or was there someplace you could leave it before entering the testing area? There’s a coat check but not sure how safe this is. Thanks in advance!
