Should I take business law during law school for the bar exam?
Hey everyone! I'm still in 2L but as a ~constant worrier~, I've been thinking of ways to maximize my success for the bar exam. I was wondering if I should take business law in my 3L to understand the concepts for the bar exam or if it's feasible for someone without a business background to learn the rules during bar prep. For context, I couldn't even tell you what securities are :') (I know, I'm actually clueless). -

Why does UofT not take reference letters
I don't know that you're in the minority - reference-checking for a job is entirely different from reference letters for academic admission, for the reasons you cite. "Making sure the person's last boss doesn't say they're an axe murderer" is not the same as "I already have a transcript saying this person's a good student, now let me read a boilerplate letter about how they're a good student."- 2

Salary research help (Toronto)
Depends on the firm, practice area, definition of what “small” is, etc. You can’t generalize the salaries of all “small firms” based on location. -

Change practice group
How can I change my practice group? From securities to finance. Every firm I reach out to wants me to have relevant finance experience, which I won't have until I get work from finance group (nothing has come out of the finance group in my firm). It feels like a life sentence. -

it looks like the waitlist reached 11. and i’m assuming more spots will be open after April 26. last year around this time they reached waitlist spots like 29. This year seems to be moving slowly.- 2

Why does UofT not take reference letters
I have the (likely) minority opinion that references can be helpful when selecting candidates for a position (in my case, hiring support staff or other lawyers). They can alert you to a red flag you might otherwise miss, or confirm your hope that this person has been successful in past roles and is easy to work with. However, that is best done in a 10min phone call. Reference letters are just more work than they are worth, both for the author and the person reading them, especially when there are probably 1000s of applicants and admission is largely based on metrics like GPA and LSAT. They provide, at best, a marginal amount of insight. When you have a handful of applicants, and you'll check the reference of maybe 1 - 2 people, I think it's worth it. -

@grainbin74 Last wave went out on April 11th and they have until April 26th. That's roughly 2 weeks so I'm assuming we'll have a similar pattern for the next waves -
