i know it's an unpredictable process, but I wanted to get some input on my chances in the 2L recruit. grades are: contracts B, Public B, criminal law B-, legal research and writing B, Torts C+, and property C+. I am a mature student and have about 5-6 years of professional experience before going into law school in the finance industry. I will be applying to the Bay Street firms, but don't have much hope and am applying more broadly as well, since i am not sure what type of law i want to practice.

Any input would be really appreciated!

What school do you attend? I’m no expert on the 2L recruit, but I’d say your chances are looking pretty bleak with 2 C’s.

Based on the Ultra Vires report from last year (https://ultravires.ca/2023/11/toronto-summer-2024-2l-recruit-numbers/) Dalhousie placed ~14 students in Bay St.

2 Cs with no B+ or better means your odds are slim to none.

I am not aiming for Bay St since it is likely out of the picture and will be applying broadly to the postings on the Viportal, which are the small to mid-sized. Are my chances still slim to none for those as well?

It’s tough to say. Even outside of “Bay Street,” a lot of the small to mid sized firms listed on Vilaw are still grade sensitive. While you have a lot of work experience, two Cs and below-median marks for your core classes will hurt a lot. I think you should still shoot your shot because even if you don’t land anything you’ll have a polished application package for future job postings.

I would shoot your shot, I got multiple offers to interview in 1L recruit with a B-/C+ average at midterms (Declined them, and happy I did). I also know multiple people who got job offers who are weaker students.

Do you attend UofA/UofC and were you applying to the Calgary 1L recruit? That is a whole different kettle of fish than a Dal student targeting Toronto in 2L.

Not to say OP shouldn't shoot their shot, but your experience is very different to the situation they are in.

My reading comprehension clearly has been displayed here. Totally missed the "Bay Street".
