Viability of Management Minor

McGill Law's info page on declaring a minor lists management as a possible option. Any current/former McGill Law students who have firsthand experience with management courses?

  • How useful has it been in practicing law?
  • Is it a big burden while studying law?
  • Is it better to just declare a major in Commercial Negotiation & Dispute Resolution, which includes management courses?

Thanks for your time!

I know people have done the minor. I know people have done the major.

If you have a commerce background, don't do either.

If you don't and are genuinely curious, do a minor. But it'll add to your course load by 6 courses, which is most easily completed in a 4 year term (instead of 3.5).

The person who did the major regretted it. But he's working in international commercial law now, so it worked out for him. It's unclear if it would have anyway, even if he didn't do the major.

3.5 years is a long time. And I don't think the major or minor makes much appreciable difference in you getting certain jobs that a well crafted cover letter couldn't mirror.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! Much obliged!
