Accepted at both and would greatly appreciate others’ thoughts given my situation!

Money:

  • Would be financing law school almost exclusively w/ loans
  • offered 10k+ to attend uofa (entrance award)
  • Personal finances would likely warrant heavy support from uoft’s aid program that could bring tuition down to ~15k/yr, which almost matches uofa.
    • Used the aid calculator on uoft’s website. Wondering what the consensus is on its accuracy
  • Would be looking to rent in either case

Location

  • Did undergrad in Edmonton and would welcome the change living in Toronto would bring!
  • not attached to practicing in any particular city and would like to maximize mobility if I can
  • Have family in Alberta, Toronto, and Vancouver

Interests

  • Not truly set on any area of law but interested in exploring civil + corporate litigation and would like to max my chances of appellate clerking (is one school inherently ‘better’ for clerking??)

With these things in mind, what do y’all think? TIA 🙂

Do you even have to ask this question?

This kind of thread is the consequence of people who go to Windsor Dual and such constantly repeating on these forums, reddit, etc, that there is no such thing as "tiers" or "rankings" where Canadian law schools are concerned and that one is essentially as good as another. And of the hyperbolic "anti-elitism" and "anti-prestige" rhetoric in general.

@Katelaw UofT is the right choice, you probably know that, but you probably have heard some of the nutty takes I alluded to in the paragraph above. Rest assured that a preference for UofT won't reflect some misplaced emphasis on "prestige" or whathaveyou. UofA is a fine school but UofT does better with clerkships and corporate jobs and with the financial support you're getting you won't have to pay a premium for those benefits. Congratulations on your acceptance into the best school in the country, with significant financial aid and with career goals aligned with what UofT offers!
