IPC question

Does anyone know if you are paid during this period of time by the company of corporation you are practicing with or does it reflect a co-op type, un-paid experience. I’m trying to gage if articling or an IPC is the better choice.

The answer to if articling or participation in the IPC program is better really boils down to your personal situation and goals.

The practice placement through Lakehead is unpaid at this time. With that being said, there have been conversations about this changing and I suspect that it will become a paid placement as the school is going to have to compete with Ryerson who built on the IPC program and is providing paid opportunities (I believe). This will likely result in some placement opportunities disappearing but there are still a bunch of practitioners throughout Ontario who are likely to remain supportive of the program. The IPC program is a great way for one to get their foot in the door in the private or public spheres.

While the marketed benefits of the IPC program suggest that you can jump straight into practice as a sole practitioner, this is definitely an uphill battle. The IPC program alleviates the stress of finding articles but limits your actual practical experience to a 4-month versus 8 or 10-month window. With that being said, a number of past graduates have stayed with the firms they had their placement with.

Another thing to consider with Lakehead's IPC program is the requirement of taking an extra course every semester. There are ways to get around this though - spring/summer courses, clinics, etc.
