Hi all,

I need some help in figuring out what my next steps should be. Below is the application status as of now:

Offers: Ryerson and Windsor Dual

Waitlist: Osgoode and Windsor Single

Under evaluation: Queens and Ottawa

With the current situation, if I am only left with Ryerson and Windsor Dual JD, which is a better choice?

Thank you so much for your advice. Hope you all have figured out where you are going. For those waiting and still deciding, stay positive and everything will be alright.

Given how much it costs to complete the Dual program, I’d go to Ryerson over Windsor Dual.

As well, based off of Ultra Vires 2L numbers from the most recent Toronto OCI recruit, Ryerson placed the same proportion of students as Windsor (18% at both schools). I’d maybe be able to wrap my head around paying the extra money if attending the more expensive school provided me with better career prospects, but in this case, there’s currently no benefit in terms of Toronto big law placement rate if you wanted to attend Windsor Dual.

For non-big law work, I’ve heard on occasion that “nobody in a position to hire you will have gone to Ryerson for their legal education” and to be mindful of that. As someone who isn’t practicing yet, I can’t speak to the importance of Ryerson not having a law school alumni base. When you factor in how new the program is, it seems to provide sufficient co-curricular and clinical opportunities for its students (with my main knock being that I wish it had its own legal aid clinic - hopefully with time one is created). I’d be surprised if someone with median (or higher) grades and a nice set of law school EC’s from Ryerson wasn’t able to land some form of non-big law work they enjoyed merely because of the program being new, but again, practicing lawyers would be able to provide better insight on this than me.

Anyways, enough of my ranting. Tl;dr, I’d go to Ryerson in your case.

Ryerson, I see no reason to pay so much more at Windsor.

I'm the one that said this, and I stand by it.

However, I am also a big believer in minimizing your debt, to the extent possible. If it is going to cost you significantly less to attend Ryerson than Windsor Dual, which I suspect it would, I would endorse the choice to go to Ryerson.
