  • Law School Admit

Hi everyone,

I have received an offer of admission for both USask and UNB and am having a hard time deciding between the two.

I am an out-of-province applicant and am open to moving/working in both provinces.

Any insights for either of these schools would be greatly appreciated!

They're both regionally focused schools. Some large Toronto firms do OCIs at UNB, and some large Calgary firms do OCIs at USask, but otherwise if you're looking for jobs in different provinces you'll have to take the initiative and do some legwork. It's certainly doable - I know numerous U of S grads that have gone to Toronto, Vancouver, and elsewhere, and UNB grads in Saskatoon, Calgary, Winnipeg, and Vancouver - but it will be outside of the easy OCI process.

So the common advice of go to school where you want to work applies.

The law schools are quite similar, with USask being slightly larger (UNB admits 90-something and USask 120-something first year students). USask is much larger overall though - UNB has a total student body of around 10k while USask is like 25k.

The cities are different too of course, with about 108k population in the Fredericton area and 317k in the Saskatoon area. Fredericton is much older, founded a hundred years before Saskatoon. New Brunswick is a coastal province while Saskatchewan is landlocked. Fredericton gets much more rain and snow and Saskatoon gets more hours of sunlight. Temperatures swing across a wider range in Saskatoon, though Fredericton averages about 2 degrees warmer.
