I am an articling student in Western Canada who is interested in securities, M&A, and corporate law. Given the current economy and anticipated recession, should I be worried? I have heard that these practice areas have slowed down a bit in the last few months. Should I be focusing on other areas of law?

Never hurts to diversify what you are capable of working on, but if you're passionate about those areas you should stick with them. Pick up non-billable tasks, offer to write articles for your firm in those areas etc.

Also, M&A, securities and corporate law are all inherently massive practice areas. I'm sure as you continue to do work in those areas you'll develop a preference for specific areas (private vs public m&a, public markets vs private...)

Follow your interests if you plan on practicing for a while. Choosing your practice area based on short-term trends will come back to bite you later on.
