Hi all,

Just a question about 1L Toronto recruit. I am wondering what "competitive" grades would be to secure interviews/jobs in the 1L recruit? I am referring to the mid-term law grades since these are the only law marks 1L students apply with!

TIA 🙂

There is a mix of employers in the Toronto 1L recruit, so grade competitiveness can vary wildly. A friend that landed Davies were between an A and an A+, a friend at Dentons was around a solid B+, and a friend at boutique was between a B and a B+. Unsurprisingly the folks on the lower end that landed jobs had interesting work experience and law school accomplishments.

Don't hold back applying -- it's good experience even if you don't get anything and it is a chance to think through how you want to brand yourself / experiment in your materials-- just don't have high expectations because even students with A averages will strike out due to the shortage in available positions (and this may prove to be a good thing in the end, as there can be a better fit for you or more prestigious / well-paying job in the NYC or 2L recruit, etc). Ultravires data is available to know how many people from your school historically have landed jobs.

Agree that it’s useful to give it a shot even if you don’t end up with a job. Worst case scenario you emerge with a polished resume and cover letter, and perhaps some interview experience.
