Articling Recruit Grades

I was a dead average student in 1 L; B's across the board and 1 B+.  Did not apply for 2L summer OCIs. First term of 2L I received 3 B+s and 2 Bs.

Thinking about doing the Articling recruit in Vancouver and I'm curious about what sort of grades are competitive, and if I have any shot.

Appreciate any input.

You have a shot. Why self select out?

Typically articling recruit is a bit less competitive than 2L recruit. Anecdotally, some of my friends received 2L Vancouver recruit offers with the same 1L grades as yours, and friends that were unsuccessful in 2L recruit were successful in the articling recruit. You really don't need straight As to get these jobs. Having above average grades makes you more competitive, but that doesn't mean you won't be successful with average grades. If anything I could see lack of a demonstrated interest being more of an obstacle, since you didn't apply for 2L recruit. If you keep your grades going how they're going and do some networking, I think you have a great shot of getting something. 🙂

My understanding is that grades get you into the door of the interview and don't really matter after that. An exceptional cover letter and solid resume can help balance out grades but it really depends on your average. It is hard to tell from what you have stated here what your actual GPA is. My understanding is that below a 2.9 can be hard to get interviews, between 3.0-3.5 you have a good chance so long as you have a good cover letter and resume, and 3.6+ you're pretty much guaranteed an interview.
