Immigration Law Prospects

Does anyone possess any insights into the level of demand for immigration lawyers in Canada? It appears that this particular area of specialization is not widely discussed and available information appears to be limited. I have garnered some information which suggests that the compensation for this profession may be comparatively low relative to other industries.

I'm sort of adjacent to what you're talking about, but I'll offer this perspective.

Canada's ramped up immigration targets means there will likely be increased demand for immigration lawyers in the next few years. The spillover to litigation for instance has been immense . But, you are right that immigration is not one of the more lucrative areas of practice. And that's likely because of who your clients tend to be: new immigrants, refugees, corporations trying to transfer workers etc. In short, clients who either don't have exceedingly deep pockets or don't want to pay egregiously large sums for work an immigration consultant could do.

Conversely, the most lucrative practice areas tend to be those servicing very wealthy clients.

For what it's worth I've seen immigration lawyers do quite well for themselves mainly by starting and growing their own practice. But if the idea is to be employed by someone else, no, you're not likely to be paid at the same scale as say a tax or M&A lawyer.

Except for working for wealthy clients with immigration matters (which certainly exist like any other area of the law, there are wealthy clients willing to pay for results), you are right that this is generally a less lucrative area of the law.

Plenty of lawyers having interesting and fulfilling careers in immigration law, both in the private bar and with the government.

It also depends on what community you are part of/will be working with. Some communities have more financial resources available to them to spend on immigration lawyers and some don't. Make sure to do your research about your target demographic.
