Working in two practice groups

I was wondering if it is possible for an associate to work in two practice groups. My practice area is corporate and securities, but I have always been keen on learning about Banking and Finance Law. In terms of time, it seems close to impossible. But assuming time permits, would it look bad on me if I approached banking/finance partners for work?

If you handle it tactfully and transparently, it could be fine. If you don't, you could find that you've pissed off one or more partners, and/or that you have more work than you can handle. So it really depends on you.

The answer will differ by firm as well. I know places that this would definitely not fly.
