Housing in Victoria

Interesting article from today about the state of Victoria's housing market at what it means for students. In short, there is a very low vacancy rate for rentals (less than 1%) and the average 1 bedroom unit is $1800/month. Anecdotally from living in Victoria, housing costs (both rental and purchase) have been rising steadily and the is a housing shortage. Many new buildings are strata, and many owners are opting for shot-term vacation rentals instead of longer-term rentals. I'm wondering if many incoming law students will have a hard time finding a place to live...

Crazy to think that for 700$, I can rent a 7'x9' room in someone's basement and only have to share the washroom with the whole family!
