Trying to gauge if my grades are competitive/good enough for the New York recruit and what my chances for OCIs in Toronto are. For reference, I go to Osgoode and my 1L grades are all B+, one A, and one A+

"NY recruit" is right now. Should just submit your apps asap or network AND submit asap.

Probably not competitive for NYC, but - as has been said myriad times - the application process is so easy it doesn’t hurt to try.

Also, agree with what was said above: you need to apply within the next week or so to have any chance in New York.

As far as Toronto, you’ll be perfectly fine.

Excellent chance to receive multiple OCI's with those grades.

I have been networking and in the process of fixing up my resume. Was wondering if it makes more sense to submit my materials and keep networking or network before I submit? Do they have a no contact period like Toronto?

No - it is truly the wild west down in the US. Not sure if there are any rules at all.

I would argue that there is no actual recruit at this point, especially for most students coming from Canadian schools - you just apply directly to the firms via email or firm portal as soon as they open up their apps.

Several V10 firms open their applications only after June 1, so I don’t think you’re behind the game yet.

True, but based on what I have seen, only 5 of the V10 firms regularly hire Canadians - forget about the ones that hire one in a few years or never hire at all. The V10s that hire regularly have all opened up their apps or are opening up their apps tmrw.

Offers have already gone out in several V50 firms and my V10 firm is already inviting students for callbacks.

Just apply. You never know.

Damn, they're hiring earlier and earlier. But yeah, you should be sending out apps at least by the first week of June. Note that some of the "lower ranking" firms won't open their application portals until late June, but you should still finish applying for all other firms.

Regarding networking: Speaking with one or two people (preferably partners) is sufficient. Speaking with like a dozen people at the same firm doesn't provide an advantage - especially if they're all junior attorneys who can't really help with the hiring process.

OP have you applied to NYC pre-oci and gotten any responses? I've got about 50 applications sent in 7H's at UoT and only rejections so far

If you’ve actually applied to 50 firms, you’re probably applying to a larger number of firms than the number that will actually / have in the past hired Canadians.

Which firms have you received rejections from if you don't mind me asking. I have applied to about 67 firms in NY and only have one from Skadden.

For reference:

Queen's 1L: 3 A's, 3 B+'s, 1B/ 1L Top 25%/ QLJ Managing editor (Apparently, that matters a lot in the States from what I've heard)

*Anyone else who'd like to chime in as well, feel free, would like to know my chances*

Almost all of the firms on the UltraVires list of firms that hired out of Toronto have given me a rejection
