Hi everyone,

I've been looking at UCalgary and UofT for law school and am conflicted about which one to choose.

Financially, UCalgary is the obvious choice. Considering the difference in tuition and living expenses, I could attend UCalgary debt free, while I'd be incurring 50k-100k to go to UofT.

However, I'm interested in BigLaw, and potentially working in Toronto in the future.

UofT seems to have a big advantage in the Toronto 2L recruit. I know UCalgary does quite well in the Calgary BigLaw recruit. However, I wonder about the possibility of moving to Toronto if I go to UCalgary.

I guess my main question is whether the financial burden of UofT is worth it for the opportunities given by attending UofT. Any other points I should consider? If anyone made a similar choice, how did you choose?

I was making this exact choice last year except I wanted to work in a different market. I ultimately went with UofT and I never regretted it, though UCalgary would have been a great option too. One thing to note is that if your parents’ income is low and you don’t have too many assets, you can get a large portion of your tuition covered with UofT’s bursary (UofT’s average bursary is over $23k).

You will have a much easier time getting a Toronto big law job coming from UofT. You need to decide how set you are on working in Toronto. The more committed you are, the more sense it makes to attend UofT. If you’re not sure yet, then provided that you get a Calgary big law job, I believe it is fairly possible to lateral to Toronto a few years into your career if you still want it by that point.

Feel free to dm me if you want to chat.
