I'm a junior looking to lateral from my Bay St firm to another Bay St firm and I'm wondering how the process works. A lot of advice out there seems to be targeted towards US associates, and I'm not sure if it applies equally in Canada. For instance, the general advice seems to be that a referral trumps a recruiter submitting you to a firm, with the lowest chance of success being direct applications. Does anyone have insight if this is also true for Canadians? I also noticed a lot of Bay St firms don't seem to have many positions publicly available - in this case, is it best to inquire directly with the hiring manager re: available positions, or network with a contact there?

Thanks!

It’s a job like any other, don’t overthink and it just apply if there’s an opening.

If you know someone at the firm you’re interested then perhaps they can help you get an interview, but ultimately it come down to what are the firm’s needs at that time.

I wouldn’t worry. Just apply everywhere you’re interested and I’m sure something will stick.
