UCalgary Criminal Law

Hello everyone!

I was hoping to get some insight from current or past UofC students on how strong of a criminal law "focus" UofC has. I am, as of right now, interested in pursuing criminal law but based on the course offerings, it does not seem like UofC has a wide range of criminal law courses (or experiential learning) that it offers. Any advice would be helpful!

Where do you want to practice?

If in Calgary, then Calgary is the best school for criminal law, especially if you want to do defence work. If not then I would recommend going to whatever school is nearest to your preferred market.

Networking is very important in finding criminal articles (again I’m talking mostly defence).

There are enough classes that if it’s your thing you can fill most of your optional courses with criminal law or criminal adjacent classes.

As far as experiential learning, look into Student Legal Assistance, UCalgary has a pretty robust program. There are also criminal law moots, and PBSC has an internship with Innocence Canada.

There’s an open house this weekend. If you’re local you should stop by and talk to the folks from SLA.
