What time do you come in at work, what time do you leave generally, how much do you work on weekends?

In-house for a financial institution.

I arrive between 8:45-9:15am. I leave between 4:30-5:30pm. I never work weekends. I occasionally work weekday evenings.

Non-Toronto Big Law. Lending/Borrowing. Very deal flow dependent. When deal flow is heavy, I'm generally in between 6:30 and 7am, logging off around 5 or 6 (unless I can't, then I just work straight through), and then hopping back on from 8-11/12. When it's normal I try to get in around 9 and head out at 5, and maybe do an hour or two at night. When it's dead I'm working even less.

I try not to work a ton on weekends, and generally work longer days when necessary to avoid it. I guard my Saturdays at all costs. Sundays I try to do some cleanup/admin (filing, time entry, billing) work and get organized for the weekend, but lately I've not been out of that habit and it's made for unpleasant weeks at times.

Corporate M&A.

Beauty of big law/private practice is that times are generally flexible as long as you get your work done and aren't late for meetings. Can roll in the office anytime between 8-11 depending on whether you have a meeting that day or not, or how slammed you are. Same with leaving the office.

With M&A it's a roller coaster. Some days you bill 3 hours and have nothing over the weekend and bill 20 hours for the week. Some times a deal blows up and you bill 90 hours over the week and your 7 days of the week consists of getting up at 8AM and working until 2AM.
