I am currently a 1L student (queens) about 3 hours away from where I live in Toronto. I travel tri-weekly to Toronto (downtown) to undergo treatment due to a chronic illness. It has become a lot for me to do this and today I learned of the compassionate transfer at Osgoode Hall. I am interested in applying for this for medical reasons. I'm just looking for reassurance that the odds are good that I will be accepted for this transfer? (granted i don't fail all of my classes and have a minimum B gpa haha)

I think it’s hard to say what the odds are since it is a fairly unique process. I doubt anyone here would be able to give you an actual probability. You should definitely try though! This would, in theory, be a very valid reason for transferring.

As you’ve probably seen on Osgoode’s website, qualifying for compassionate transfer puts you in a pool of compassionate transfer applicants. This pool is at least half of transfer applicants. Your grades and 1L accomplishments do matter, especially when comparing like applicants with each other. At the same time, the transfer page says that priority will be given to those who need to relocate to Toronto for medical reasons. So while I have no particular insight into the process, it’s sounds like you would be a priority candidate for the transfer process. Keep up decent grades and other academic qualifications to make sure that you are competitive with other people who might need to transfer for medical reasons, and I imagine you’ll have a decent shot. On a personal note, you have my sincerest praise for persevering in 1L while dealing with this type of illness!

I transferred from Ottawa to OZ. (long time ago)

My classmate was able to transfer with  a B-average.

She was a single mom. Her two very young child had to live with their grandma in Toronto.

Thank you for your kind words! I'm hoping it'll all work out in the end! :')

A B+ average is typically considered competitive for transferring to Osgoode as a 2L. An admissions officer at Osgoode gave me this information directly. Candidates who need to be in Toronto for medical treatments are the top priority for compassionate transfers. You likely have a decent chance of being accepted with a B average, but this also comes down to who you are competing against and how many applicants there are. While they typically employ the honour system insofar as taking your word for the basis of your compassionate application, providing medical documentation confirming everything you say is a good idea, which should be easy enough for you to do based on what you said above.

Good luck.
