Maintaining grades for jobs?

I was fortunate to receive a 2L summer offer at a big Toronto firm that I happily plan to stay at long term. As a result I am finding myself seriously lacking motivation to excel in school now. How important are grades when it comes to being asked back to article and as a first year associate? Do I need to be above the curve?

You will almost certainly get hired back for articling and your hireback as an associate will be more about your relationships and work as an articling student. That said, find some motivation because having your grades drop is incredibly short-sighted and foolish. It's not your choice whether you get to happily stay there long term. You'll feel like an idiot if you don't get hired back or you end up hating your position and want to leave as other firms/companies will definitely ask for your grades. Is that enough motivation?

Some firms don't ever even ask for your updated grades. Some will ask but generally not care unless you start failing. That said, if this is going to be your career, why would you want the baggage of a bad transcript if you don't need to? It's especially silly to let your grades drop now when you're now in control of what classes you take and have the ability to align with your interests.
