I'm a recent call in Ontario and the US (multi-state), working in Michigan for over a year now, and want to return home. I don't want to work for a firm that won't allow me a decent work-life balance, especially because I'm 33F, and considering having kids in the next few years.

Government is my ideal next step, what are some avenues in at this stage?

If you're already licensed in Ontario, then wouldn't you just apply directly to open job postings?

It's possible that not working in Ontario is a disadvantage for Ontario govt jobs, in which case you might have to consider working at an Ontario firm for a while first.

It would be tough, if not almost impossible, to get a job within the civil law side of MAG. You would have to secure a contract and these are almost always closed competitions.

MAG Criminal is more doable as there are a lot of short-term contracts available. I'm a Crown and I know a Crown that worked in US big law first, worked in-house, and is now a Crown. Crown Law offices have high turnover and may have short-term contracts available where they are open to any lawyer to apply. It is possible in cases to network your way in to an interview.

As for Crown Corporations that are government adjacent (e.g. like the OSC, Metrolinx, FSRA), those are open and you can apply like any other job.

You can narrow it down by field of law. Are you looking at administrative tribunal work? Policy? Criminal?

Government jobs outside the GTA are easier to come by.
