Will firms ask for grades during articling?

My grades significantly dropped in 3L on exchange (and they will show up in my transcript). Will biglaw firms ask for grades during articling and consider it for hireback?

Some firms ask for final law school transcripts, but your hireback should be based on your performance during articles rather than grades. If you are not kept on you will certainly be asked for transcripts in job applications for other firms. After a few years of practice the grades become mostly irrelevant.

I know a firm that asks and one that does not.

Same answer as above re the second part.

I have not been asked to provide grades since I was accepted to article after my 2L summer.

My firm (Bay St biglaw) has told us they will be will be collecting 3L transcripts. My understanding is that associate offers will mostly be based on performance/market need, but 3L grades will play at least some part in hire back decisions. Most other students I've spoken to in biglaw has said the same. 2-3 outliers have mentioned that grades will be requested but not considered unless there is a serious dip in grades.
