Expectations for 1L Summer Student

Hi all, 

I’m curious how much I should be working as a 1L summer student. 

I have been going into work early every day and I often leave late. I work hard when I’m in the office and I believe the quality of my work so far has been at least satisfactory. 

I constantly have more tasks than I can complete, and now I’m finding myself working in the evening again after leaving the office in order to meet a deadline. I’ve already had to get a couple of extensions and I’m nervous that needing more will impact hire-back and their opinion of me. 

I hope I don’t sound ungrateful—I really like the work I’m doing and the firm overall. I’m really happy to be here and I’ve been learning a lot. I just want to know if this is standard and to be expected as a summer student.

What type of a firm are you at? Ie. how many lawyers and what types of clients do you have?

It's a mid-sized, full service firm. Not in a major city.
