can anyone clarify the LSO blackout period rules? It says on the website that "recruitment activity" is not allowed - does this include students reaching out to ask about the firm to lawyers and summer students/articling students?

You're fine. I've been doing that for months. Firms actively encourage you to do so. I believe the LSO is restricting firms from conducting outreach, you or I doing it really isn't "recruitment".

Views vary on this. I personally feel (and it is generally the feeling at my firm) that telling a student about the benefits of working here is a recruitment activity, so during the blackout period I don't respond substantively to emails (I respond to note that unfortunately we're in the blackout period, so I can't provide information) and definitely would not take a student out to coffee, etc. Note that I am more than happy to do those things before the blackout period. The commitment to following the letter and spirit of the regulation varies between firms and lawyers though.
