Hello,

I'm currently a law student in Ontario. I plan on finishing my JD here but the thought of moving to Montreal and practicing law is appealing to me.

My French is not good but I'm willing to take the time to learn/enroll in courses to become fluent.

I am wondering if my JD is transferrable to Quebec - and if not, what steps I would need to take to practice in Quebec?

Thank you.

You do not actually need a civil law degree to practice in Québec IF you are a member in good standing of another provincial bar. You would however, have to pass three exams administered by the Barreau du Québec: 1) Droit civil I et procédures afférentes; 2) Droit civil II et procédures afférentes; and, 3) Législation, réglementation et aspects déontologiques liés à l’exercice de la profession d’avocat au Québec. Also, being able to communicate in French as a lawyer is a legislative requirement in Québec as per the Charter of the French Language, so you would need to meet a certain French language requirement (presumably also by passing some kind of language test administered by the Barreau.) You can find information on how lawyers licensed in other Canadian jurisdictions can apply for a full permit (and thus become a member of the Barreau du Québec) in the Règlement sur les autorisations légales d’exercer la profession d’avocat hors du Québec qui donnent ouverture au permis du Barreau du Québec, here: https://www.legisquebec.gouv.qc.ca/fr/document/rc/B-1, r. 2/

It is also worth noting that there are fees associated with all of these tests and with applying for this permit.
