I see a lot of posts made about articling, internships, summer positions, OCIs, etc.

Could someone provide us newly admitted with a breakdown of what occurs when? For example, does articling only occur in 2L? Are OCIs in 1L?

Thanks!

There is also a Calgary/Edmonton recruit, Manitoba recruit, Atlantic Canada recruit, hell some kind of mini hamilton recruit, etc, but as a quick overview:

1st Year

Ottawa 1L/2L (shared) IP Recruit

Apps, interviews, offers are in October

Toronto 1L Recruit

Apps due in January, interviews and offers are in late February

2nd Year

Vancouver 2L Recruit

Apps due in late August (before entering 2L), interviews and offers are in late October

Toronto 2L Recruit

Apps due in late July before entering 2L (as of last year, previously it was August), OCIs in September or October (school dependent), in-firm interviews and offers in early November

Ottawa 1L/2L (shared) IP Recruit

Apps, interviews, offers are in October

Ottawa (Regular) 2L Recruit

Apps due in January, interviews and offers are in February

After 2nd Year, Before 3rd Year

Vancouver Articling Recruit

Apps due in late June, in-firm interviews and offers in August

Toronto Articling Recruit

Apps due in late June, in-firm interviews and offers in August

To clarify your question, articling typically starts a few months after you graduate law school, your aim is to get a job offer for an articling position anytime before then.
