Out of curiosity –– I summered at a Bay Street/2L OCI firm and had a criminal background check conducted on me. Surprisingly, I've been through much more rigorous (or irritating/harassment-like) background checks for non-law 40k/year jobs.

My firm (Bay St. firm) asked us to fill out contact information as well as reason for leaving for all previous jobs, but to my knowledge, these people were not contacted.
