Pivoting Career Post-Articling?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone here changed their career trajectory post-articling? I'm sure its more common between certain areas of the law, but I recently accepted an articling position within a specialized field (to spare personal details, think L&E or immigration).

Of course I still have to see how articling will play out - but out of curiosity, if I end up wanting to change my career path to corporate/real estate/ commercial - is this possible? I can understand why firms wouldn't want to hire a 1st year associate without any experience in their respective fields.

Can anyone speak to how difficult it would be to pivot to this area of the law post-articling? Does anyone have any tips?

Thank you!

Many people do this. Some people switch a few years in. It will take a bit of effort, time and a fair amount of networking but not impossible. A colleague went from litigation to capital markets out of articling (granted this was at the peak of 2021 market).

There are two articling students I know of who both left legal practice to pursue policy work with the federal government.
