Grad House

Hi!

I got accepted to UofT, and want to explore my housing options before I accept my offer. 
So please share with me some insights you have about the grad house. Would you suggest living there for 1L? Is it clean and nice?

Seconding this to add: Any advice on alternative living arrangements outside of grad house as well?

I personally really like the place and it's been clean and nice for me. However, I have heard stories of other students having suites with bugs etc in them so I think it depends on what suite you get.

Hey, current resident of Grad House here!

 

Pros:

- The price is pretty decent, though I'm not sure if it's worth the amount of space you get.

- The location--it's hard to beat a ten minute walk to the law school.

 

Cons:

- Roommates are coin toss. Some people luck out, some don't. 

- The decor/vibe is atrocious. Uncovered concrete walls, metal slats over the blinds, fifthly carpets, marks and scrapes that extend beyond what is reasonably expectable in an apartment. My dorm was filled with old food and kitchen implements from previous occupants when we arrived.

- Being stuck in a dorm is like still being in undergrad. It's nice to be so close to everything, but it makes it hard to escape the law school environment at the end of the day, especially since many residents end up with other law school students as roommates.

- We've had problems with thefts in particular this year. They used to have a table for UberEats deliveries and the like, and things kept getting stolen from there. So in January, they moved the table into the lobby of the building, which fine, makes sense. Then the thefts continued, so they moved the table so it would be closer to the person on duty in the lobby. And the thefts continued. So a few weeks ago they did away with the table completely. This is a fairly niche issue, but to me it illustrates that vibes at Grad House. Your shit gets stolen and the remedies that the Grad House is willing to take are piecemeal and too late usually.

My honest recommendation is if you have other options, take it. But I know lots of other 1Ls in Grad House who love the place or at least like it, so don't take my opinion for gospel!
