I’m a first gen law student and I have no idea what the procedure is for studying for the bar. Are there classes? Books? Free materials? When do I start?

any guidance is appreciated including what did and didn’t work for you 🙂

In Ontario the LSO will provide you with the study matierals. There is also an index compiled privately that many people use. Neither of these is avalible to you yet, so don't stress out and worry you're missing something.

Are you in Ontario? I found this Emond pdf really helpful! https://emond.ca/Emond/media/Free-Materials/The_Comprehensive_Bar_Exam_Preparation_Manual.pdf

The LSO will provide the study materials (you'll pay for them, and then print/bind them yourself). The Emond guide lays out a few options. My approach was just: read the materials through once & highlight (colour-coding: for me that meant yellow = numbers like deadlines/dates/etc, green = calculations/formulas, pink = exceptions, purple = statutes/sections, blue = titles, peach = key terms that didn't fall within the other categories), do one practice test for each of the exams (I did the free Access Bar Prep mini-tests and then purchased one set of full tests from them), re-read the Professional Responsibility materials.

It's an overwhelming process when you're first diving in, but pretty straightforward once you get into it.
