Hello all,

I am a 1L student at Osgoode and recently got my grades back - 2 B+ and 1 B.  Are these grades good? I’m feeling a bit discouraged and disappointed but I also understand it’s about the curve. I was looking to participate in the 1L business recruit, but given my grades, should I not waste my time? Additionally, are my grades competitive for the osgoode clinics, ideally i was hoping to get one of the business clinics.

Finally, what are your tips to get A’s? I’m sure that’s a very general question, but I’m curious to see if those who received A’s had similar habits.

Thanks in advance.

I don't go to Osgoode so I will not comment on the clinics question. For the recruit you should apply if these are the type of jobs that interest you. While your grades are not outstanding it is still possible someone may hire you but you reduce that chance to exactly zero if you do not apply.

There are real reasons not to apply, I did not apply to the 1L recruit because I wanted the summer off but self-selecting out of positions you want at this stage to me does not make sense. Even if you are unsuccessful many of the things you do from prepping the materials to doing interviews will be helpful in your eventual 2L recruit.

And you have decent grades, good is relative. You are an above-average law student it seems so congrats on a good semester.

Yes, apply to the recruit. Yes, your grades are good. Will you get a job through the 1L recruit? Probably not, but that is the case for the vast majority of applicants. But you absolutely should not count yourself out. Keep up the good work in second semester.

1. It's just called the recruit or the 1L recruit. Don't call it the "business recruit". Not even sure where you got that from. Anyways, yeah, still worth applying with a pair of B+s.

2. You'll have no problem with most clinics (some of the business ones have slightly different requirements). Most clinics will care more about your supporting materials.
