Hi current/former Queen’s Law students! I’m looking at coming back home for law school and hoping to get a sense of what kind of summer opportunities exist for law students in the city. Since I’d be living at home I’d prefer to stay in town over the summer rather than sublet in Ottawa or Toronto, but I imagine the local market might be a bit flooded given Queen’s size. Can anyone who has stayed in town over the summer (either first or second) shed some light on this?

For clarity, is your intent to work in Kingston after graduation? Or just during the summer?

Staying in Kingston post-grad would definitely be appealing to me although it would depend on what I was doing, which is hard to guess at this stage. I’m more interested in commercial or estate law and less in family or criminal.

Easy to find a job serving or whatever. Lots of restaurants in the city obviously.

I would also imagine that firms would be receptive to 1L student applications even if not posted. Lots of Kingston firms participate in the 2L recruit and many do commercial/estates.

I know a few people who summered at the clinic in 1L, there were also research opportunities and some people got jobs at firms. It seemed to me that if you wanted to do legal work in Kingston it was available.
