Congratulations! So exciting to see these posts. I am new to the forum,  early 30's, I am still completing undergrad credits at UFV, volunteered over 10 years for a community centre governed under Fraser Health, over 6 years working experience in healthcare and 6 years in Real Estate. Going through a brutal divorce and self representing myself in provincial court because I only got enough money to pay for a lawyer to handle my file in Supreme. Anyhow, it's a lengthy story but going back to my question here :), I wanted to ask you, how many credits did you apply with to be accepted under the discretionary section?. I know with the discretionary category it has to fall between min 60 credits and max 90 credits because if it is over 90 credits, an applicant will automatically be categorized under a general applicant. If you can shed some light on this part, I would truly appreciate it. Thank you.

Thank you! Sounds like you’ve got lots of softs and life experience that will help with your application as a discretionary applicant. I was in my 4th year when I applied and had completed exactly 90 credits at that point. You’d have a better chance of getting in with a minimum of 90 credits because you’d be considered in both categories, versus only one category if you have 60-89 completed credits. A majority of admits hold a four-year degree upon their entry into the JD program at UBC, so that’s something to keep in mind.

Also, you’ll have a bit more wiggle room admission GPA wise with a minimum of 90 completed credits, because more credits would be dropped (12 worst credits dropped versus only 6).

There isn’t a maximum limit credit-wise; all of your completed credits will be considered when they calculate your admission GPA at UBC.

In your PS, highlight your experiences and how they have positively shaped your aspiration to study law and how you think your experiences make you suited to practice law. I think what saved me was my PS; write a positive, compelling and succinct personal statement!

Hope this helps! Shoot me a message if you wanna talk about this further.

Thank you, your reply has been extremely helpful.

I will ensure to highlight what you've mentioned in my PS when the time comes. I'll just continue accumulating my undergrad credits, I'm doing 3 courses per semester because on top of work etc., I got 2 little girls under 5 years of age so definitely busy on my end :)). This forum is Godsend!

Appreciate your response and truly wishing you nothing but the best! 😊

Just got off the waitlist onto an acceptance today! Rounded to 82 GPA after drops and 168 LSAT. Literally SCREAMED after getting the email because I was worried I would be low on the waitlist with no ranking out.
