Will feedback ever stop feeling like a gut punch?
You’ll come to learn that lawyers are an idiosyncratic bunch - a lot of stuff they want done like this is just preference based. Whether it’s done one way or the other doesn’t matte, beyond the margins. I wouldn’t worry too much about this. While I learned a lot early in my career and sometimes actually miss getting the type of substantive feedback on written materials you’re getting now, I sometimes cringe at all the weird formatting and writing suggestions I got from senior lawyers when I started out - and now never follow. -

Why law school? If you never took undergraduate seriously, what makes you think you’ll take law school seriously? It’s very unlikely any school in Canada will let you in, even with a stellar LSAT. I think you should look into other careers.- 2

Hi all, I need some advice. I never took my undergrad seriously, hence my horrible CGPA. I am strongly considering going to the UK for law school (which is self explanatory). However, I am curious to know if I'll have a fighting change at being accepted in any law school in Canada with a strong LSAT score as well as a good explanation for my low cgpa. My final two years were not great either. I had a three C+, one D and unfortunately one F that tanks my last two years significantly. The bottom line is that I would rather not be so far from home, or pay an arm and a leg for a law degree that may not have such a great ROI. Please let me know what you guys think. -

International Human Rights Law Inquiry
Apologies if this counts as piling on, I just found this thread deep down in Google while doing some research. So, I am one of the many that went into law school with the express intent of working in IHL/IHRL. I am happy to report that I was successful! However, I worked for over 20 years in related fields before law school. I have had no issues finding work in the field, in fact, I turn down many more offers than I accept. I travel all over the world and help people in very difficult situations. I don't say any of that as a flex, but to reinforce what people were saying in the other comments. I want to be crystal clear when I saw that nobody is hiring me for my JD, and nobody cares that I went to a great law school in Canada. They are hiring me because of my 20+ years of experience. The JD helps in a couple of important ways: It opens doors that would not open without a JD. I have more credibility when I am in the room discussing, interviewing, negotiating, etc. People are less likely to f*** with me when I am abroad. I can charge a higher daily rate when working with governments. When governments, firms, or NGOs are looking to contract work out, it is one more arrow in my quiver that my competition may not have. I don't want to discourage you, or others, as there is a lot of great work to be done in IHL/IHRL. However, if you are a K-JD or something similar, and you want to work in the field, it will be an uphill battle. You likely need to be the absolute best at everything you do: Valedictorian, SCC clerkship, prestigious international LLM, fellowships, etc. Or, a more realistic route is to see how you can slot yourself into existing HR regimes domestically, with NGOs, practice refugee law, admin law, etc. Lastly, you may notice that I stated I work in IHL/IHRL, not that I practice IHL/IHRL. That is because most of the work I do is observation, education, intervention, advocacy, and research. I rarely 'practice' law, as such. I am hesitant to say much more at the risk of doxxing myself, but if anyone is reading this please feel free to send me a DM, or reply with questions. I have never been to this forum before, but a long time ago I was a member (read: creep, as I never posted) of the previous forum when I was applying to law schools.- 1

Waitlist 2024
Not sure if this will reach anyone now that it's a year later but: did anyone's portal update with the GPA Eval before you were waitlisted? It just showed up for me yesterday. I've read that that's usually a good sign but it's so late in the game I'm not sure. Thanks! -

I agree with what others have said - lawyers are finnicky (to say the least). Unfortunately, I did not get a good sense of the types of comments that you are receiving. Are the comments primarily about organization, grammar and vocabulary or are they more legal related? The former is probably more down to the personal style of the lawyer(s) - which you can always adjust to, the latter might be a subtle hint to start asking more questions and/or to conduct more thorough research. If you have access to a precedents folder, you could also look at some of the prior correspondence/court submissions from the lawyer(s) to see what they might be expecting in terms of style, vocabulary and thought process (bonus if they have mock-ups or drafts of their own/other lawyers' work).- 1

This is really helpful. I'm realizing my work isn't necessarily bad or wrong, they just want it done differently. I need to work on shifting my mindset and building confidence in my work. Thank you! -

Thanks for this! It's reassuring to know that the feedback is normal. I'm good about remembering the preferences of the lawyers I work with. I won't make the same mistake twice. Most of the feedback I get is on how information is presented to a client. For example, I might think something is best presented in a table whereas the senior lawyer prefers it in a list. I guess this is just part of doing the work and learning.
