Discretionary 2024
Yess it changed a couple weeks ago to say "Waitlist" under D category. I called the admissions office and they said the earliest I can hear back is May 8th because that's when the 1st round of offers expire (I think that's what she meant, not sure though). -

Yeah, I agree with it depends upon how you define boutique. I'm sure the majority of people would include many of the high-end boutique firms into their denotation of Big Law despite them not exactly being full-service firms. Overall, I think @WiseGhost's answer and advice is spot-on here.- 1

Part of the problem here is people use "boutique" to mean "anything that isn't big law or government". Which I suppose can be true, but makes generalizations tough. To answer the question, some firms really do care less about grades and more about a demonstrated interest in the practice area. Typically, those are firms that do the less popular work, they want to know you want to be there and that you'll stick around.- 1

Broadly speaking (and with the exception of a few high-end boutiques, as noted) yes. Not "less weight", but they will move down somewhat in the grades pool to select their candidates, which I guess is the same thing. Think about it from the mid-sized firm's perspective. If you OCI nothing but top 10% candidates, those candidates (even if they don't PFO you after OCI's, which many will) are likely to be also interviewing with Sisters. At the end of the day, you are competing directly with Sisters, and unless you've done an exceptional sales job you're going to lose that battle repeatedly. So why not move down a band and try to interview candidates who are still strong, but whose grades won't quite get them interviews with the biggest of the big? This is what rational mid-sized firms generally do.- 1

Firmly accepted this morning right after getting the email 🙂 LSAT 157 cGPA 3.33, experience in political journalism and strong personal essay I would say. Can't wait to start!! -

You'll have to research the firms individually, because there are boutiques that are more selective than big law firms. But on average, mid sized firms are more likely to hire candidates without stellar grades than big law firms. As far as having an excellent application goes, it is important to a) make all your materials well formatted and consistent and b) highlight some interesting experiences or a demonstrated interest in a practice area. I had many people read over my application materials, and they caught things that I otherwise would not have noticed. Another thing that I think is important is to have a narrative that is consistent with the way that you present yourself during an interview. I'm an awkward dude and no any amount of interview practice could fully change that. I found that interviewers were more receptive when I presented myself as a hardworking and conscientious person that could be the brains behind a file instead of a lawyer that could attract clients through charm.- 4
