International Human Rights Law Inquiry
Apologies if this counts as piling on, I just found this thread deep down in Google while doing some research. So, I am one of the many that went into law school with the express intent of working in IHL/IHRL. I am happy to report that I was successful! However, I worked for over 20 years in related fields before law school. I have had no issues finding work in the field, in fact, I turn down many more offers than I accept. I travel all over the world and help people in very difficult situations. I don't say any of that as a flex, but to reinforce what people were saying in the other comments. I want to be crystal clear when I saw that nobody is hiring me for my JD, and nobody cares that I went to a great law school in Canada. They are hiring me because of my 20+ years of experience. The JD helps in a couple of important ways: It opens doors that would not open without a JD. I have more credibility when I am in the room discussing, interviewing, negotiating, etc. People are less likely to f*** with me when I am abroad. I can charge a higher daily rate when working with governments. When governments, firms, or NGOs are looking to contract work out, it is one more arrow in my quiver that my competition may not have. I don't want to discourage you, or others, as there is a lot of great work to be done in IHL/IHRL. However, if you are a K-JD or something similar, and you want to work in the field, it will be an uphill battle. You likely need to be the absolute best at everything you do: Valedictorian, SCC clerkship, prestigious international LLM, fellowships, etc. Or, a more realistic route is to see how you can slot yourself into existing HR regimes domestically, with NGOs, practice refugee law, admin law, etc. Lastly, you may notice that I stated I work in IHL/IHRL, not that I practice IHL/IHRL. That is because most of the work I do is observation, education, intervention, advocacy, and research. I rarely 'practice' law, as such. I am hesitant to say much more at the risk of doxxing myself, but if anyone is reading this please feel free to send me a DM, or reply with questions. I have never been to this forum before, but a long time ago I was a member (read: creep, as I never posted) of the previous forum when I was applying to law schools. -

Waitlist 2024
Not sure if this will reach anyone now that it's a year later but: did anyone's portal update with the GPA Eval before you were waitlisted? It just showed up for me yesterday. I've read that that's usually a good sign but it's so late in the game I'm not sure. Thanks! -

I agree with what others have said - lawyers are finnicky (to say the least). Unfortunately, I did not get a good sense of the types of comments that you are receiving. Are the comments primarily about organization, grammar and vocabulary or are they more legal related? The former is probably more down to the personal style of the lawyer(s) - which you can always adjust to, the latter might be a subtle hint to start asking more questions and/or to conduct more thorough research. If you have access to a precedents folder, you could also look at some of the prior correspondence/court submissions from the lawyer(s) to see what they might be expecting in terms of style, vocabulary and thought process (bonus if they have mock-ups or drafts of their own/other lawyers' work). -

This is really helpful. I'm realizing my work isn't necessarily bad or wrong, they just want it done differently. I need to work on shifting my mindset and building confidence in my work. Thank you! -

Thanks for this! It's reassuring to know that the feedback is normal. I'm good about remembering the preferences of the lawyers I work with. I won't make the same mistake twice. Most of the feedback I get is on how information is presented to a client. For example, I might think something is best presented in a table whereas the senior lawyer prefers it in a list. I guess this is just part of doing the work and learning. -

Realistically (and to me, ideally) you'll never stop receiving feedback from someone, whether it's a colleague or a client or a judge. In a lot of cases, people provide feedback not because your work was done incorrectly, but because they just would have done it differently. When I review someone else's work, I ask myself "is this wrong, or is it just different?" If your nerves/anxiety feel like they're having a negative impact on your experience, I strongly recommend talking to someone.- 2

Is the feedback repetitive of feedback you've previously received? I.e. are you making the same mistakes/not adjusting to the preference of the senior lawyer over and over? That's the sort of thing that I'd be concerned about. If it isn't, then I wouldn't take is personally and its just lawyers gonna lawyer. I used to read, re read, re re read, then wait until the next morning and re read something. My supervisor/principal would still redline it to death. Had to accept that that is just part of the game. I'm ~10 years out, and I'll let you know (feedback never stops). You could send a document to 5 different lawyers and get 5 different sets of feedback.- 1

For background, I was called to the bar about a year ago. I'm very grateful that the associates and partners I work with all take the time to give me written and verbal feedback on my work. Generally, their feedback is professional and never rude or harsh. I have peers who do not have this type of support who I know are struggling. When I was articling I even enjoyed the experience of receiving feedback and found it rewarding to implement their feedback on future projects. It was exciting to see my growth as a lawyer. Lately, something in me has shifted. Before I send my work to the associate or partner I'm working with I feel incredibly nervous. I spend hours reading and re-reading my work before sending anything out. My nerves are having a reverse effect where I'm now making more mistakes that I'm not catching. On top of this, I'm also feeling somewhat resentful toward receiving feedback. Before my nerves started to impact my work I had a lot of projects that I was proud of and thought that they wouldn't receive any redlines, only to get them back and see that my work is still being torn apart. I'm aware that I still have so much to learn and I should be happy to have the support, but the constant feeling that my work is never good enough is starting to break me down. Is this something that anyone else has struggled with when they were a junior lawyer or am I being ridiculous? When did the lawyers that you work with start to trust your work? -

Resume Builders for Associates?
I agree with @CleanHands - marketing yourself internally to partners as ready, willing, and able is the best thing you can do. I will offer some suggestions external to the firm though: Join and participate in your local Chamber of Commerce/Board of Trade Get on the board of a charity/non-profit (could be the Chamber/BoT) I found that firms I worked for appreciated my participation in these types of activities because they can lead to clients.- 1
