Chances for Dal and UNB + advice
Hi, it's my first time posting here and I am wondering what my chances are in getting accepted to UNB and DAL if I applied with a 3.75/4.3 L2 GPA (3.6 cGPA) and a 160 LSAT score. I am from NB originally and currently live in NS, going into my fourth year of my undergrad. As mentioned by the title, I am also needing some advice as to whether I should apply now with my current grades or wait until I complete my final term which would have me attend one year after, leaving me with a gap year. All responses are appreciated even if they are critical! -

Barrister - 20 Day Study Plan
Hmm, yes, I think I'm going to plan to read at least one solicitors' section before the barristers exam, possibly before starting on the barristers materials so those will be fresher in my head going into the first exam. Totally possible that this will end up backfiring, but it does seem like it would be really tough to get through all the solicitors materials between the two exams. -

Bar and Solicitor Appendices
Is it useful to schedule time to read/highlight/tab these? From reading the materials so far, I noticed it cites the rules/authority when it gives you a rule or general principle, but I wanted to double check if people found it effective to read the appendices as they would the other study materials. Thank you! -

SCC Clerking as a Junior Lawyer
Around half of SCC clerks are 2 years out of law school when they start – they either did a clerkship and then a year at a firm, or vice versa. The other half are typically one year out of law school and are coming straight from an appellate clerkship. It's rare to clerk at the SCC without a prior clerkship, but it seems like there are a few people each year who do that. You can lurk around on LinkedIn if you want to get an idea of what types of experience those people have. -

I think your biggest obstacle would be not having a previous clerkship, which is seemingly becoming quite an important consideration. Not sure if this is an issue for people applying from practice though. -

I'm sorry, I'm just kind of astounded that someone could have thought that they were uncompetitive for clerkships generally while in law school and then think they were competitive for the SCC after graduating. If you are actually competitive for the SCC (and your only other post was asking about grades for medals, so maybe you are), what kind of grades did you think you needed for clerkships before? To actually answer your questions, you really don't need to worry about an SCC clerkship being detrimental to your career compared to alternatives... -

SCC Clerking as a Junior Lawyer
One thing I regret from my time in law school is that I didn't give myself a chance to apply to clerkships. I thought I wasn't competitive enough. Anyways, now I'm almost at the end of my articling and I'm considering whether it's still possible to clerk at the SCC. I know that ONCA only accepts applications from law students, so the SCC is the only other option. For context, I'm articling in, and intend to practise in, civil litigation. My two biggest concerns are: (1) is it too late to clerk now? If I apply in early 2025, that means, if I'm successful, I won't begin until 2026. By that time I'll be a second year call. At that point in my career, is there more value to clerking at the SCC than actually litigating? (2) Would a law firm be happy to see one of its second-year associates taking a year off work to go clerk, or would the disruption to ongoing work be too much for them to accommodate? I imagine losing a second year associate for a year would affect others' workloads and might be long enough for the firm to want to hire a replacement to fill the vacuum. Does this even matter? As a SCC clerk, should I even worry about getting work in a competitive civil litigation shop afterwards? Any thoughts would be appropriated. -

As an update on this, I decided to purchase questions from the Beat the Bar page. It has lots of questions and is forcing me to navigate the material. Some of the questions cover content outside of PR, but it was useful in helping me identify whether I knew where information was and how well I knew it. I will probably purchase more in the future but thus far, for $100, I am happy with this.- 2

NY Recruit?
I don’t understand what’s preventing you from applying. You already have a resume from the 1L recruit. It’ll take under an hour to format it according to the US recruit standards. If I’m not mistaken, many Wall St firms don’t even ask for a cover letter. Your 1L job will probably not be super advantageous for the recruit, it’s fine but I wouldn’t count on it carrying you. It might be getting too late to start networking, but if you have the grades then you can get away without networking (at least coming from Oz/UofT, idk about Western). Or you can reach out now and see if anything comes out of it. Look for Western grads and Canadians more broadly. -

Barrister - 20 Day Study Plan
Hmm, that is good to know. I thought about avoiding stacking the material as well, but I don't quite know how I would review more material in less time (yay, Ontario, for making this suck). The way they have it structured, the Barrister is on June 4, and the Solicitor is on June 18 and the Solicitor has more materials (by a few hundred pages). Once I reach the end of reading through the Barrister materials, I might re-evaluate with this in mind, though. -

NY Recruit?
Hello, I am 1L at Western. My mid-term grades were quite high, I have very strong work experience, and I also have a unique/quite competitive 1L position. I have received several emails concerning the NY recruit and I would be interested in applying as I think I would like to practice in NY at some point. However, I am a bit wary of applying because Western is not known to place in the NY recruit and I feel like as a result the requirements to be considered would be even higher than for an applicant from Osgoode or UofT. Similarly, unlike the Toronto market, I don't know anyone working in New York and have virtually no network...I definitely feel like a huge part of me getting my foot in the door for 1L interviews was the fact that I already had quite a few connections. What do people think? Is it worth it to throw in an application? Additionally, are there any resources that would be helpful regarding the application process? Thanks! -

Allard Discretionary Requirements Checklist
I had the same issue and re-emailed them my documents in reply to my original email with the PDF attached. They said that my documents hadn't been attached to my file so it was good to have reached out. My portal was updated. I was just accepted under the discretionary category on friday. Good luck!
